This commission was for a 4'x4' board for someone's son who had just started Warhammer 40k.
Done in the style of the Battlegrounds board, this version is slightly different: the scrap metal lies flat so that moveable terrain pieces aren't obstructed, and the static grass has been placed on the terrain instead of the board.

I wanted this board to have a strong sense of theme. When creating atmosphere, less is more, and a few key details are all you need for your imagination to fill in the rest.
For example, the grey scheme is useful as it can represent the concrete ground of a battered city, or the ashen landscape of a battlefield.
Another example is the buildings; lining the buildings side-by-side creates the illusion of a street-side; facing them against each other creates the effect of a market centre; placing them far apart and away from each other projects the atmosphere of a larger cityscape.
The rocky outcrops and craters can help to determine visually where the 'outside' of the city is, and the trees can be either wild, or cultivated city-trees which have died.
